Studio A: the Last Broadcast

"Farewell to the Mart"

Right: In September, 1989, you see the Georgia Frances Orchestra in studio A. (Georgia and her violin are seen just to the left of the microphone; in the rear you can see her husband John Bishop and his guitar.) They are playing the "First Nighter Theme" during the taping of a special (produced by the curator) called "Farewell to the Mart".
Georgia Frances

In the foreground you see ace WMAQ-TV cameraman Paul Nagaro. He was assisted in this taping by cameraman Hal Bernstein, audio Engineer Jim MacDonald and lighting director Bob Canman. John Martin (who else?) was the video tape editor.

Note the RCA model 4A condenser microphone. It is as old as the studio itself. It (along with a 1932 vintage model 44A velocity mike) captured the audio for this broadcast. The curator wanted a vintage sound. As it turned out, the 4A sounded better than WMAQ-TV's present-day microphones. [The model 4A was restored by Bob Pacquette of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It's part of Bob's microphone museum, housed in the headquarters of his Select Sound business. A number of Bob's vintage mikes appeared in Woody Allen's film Zelig.

"Farewell to the Mart" was the last broadcast produced in studio A.
