Streaming Video the Last WMAQ-TV News Broadcast from the Merchandise Mart Studios

Curator's note: Below you can access streaming video of most of WMAQ-TV's last news broadcast before moving from its Merchandise Mart studios to new facilities in the NBC Tower. You might find it interesting to compare this broadcast with a 10pm newscast anchored by Floyd Kalber on February 23rd, 1967.

Above: Sportcaster Tom Shaer, anchor Art Norman and weatherman Jim Tilmon on the WMAQ-TV news set in studio E.

Segment 1: Anchor Art Norman leads into a package by reporter Renee Ferguson on a snag in elections for local public school councils in the city of Chicago. Included is some brief but vintage sound and video of the Reverend Willie Barrow of Operation Push.

Segment 2: Reporter Sharon Wright comes to the aid of some perplexed yuppie residents of Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood.

Segment 3: Anchor Art Norman reports that repairs to Chicago's Dan Ryan Expressway have been completed ahead of schedule. (Current Chicago motorists now facing several years of Ryan construction may find this segment of interest).

Segment 4: Jim Tilmon reports good weather for the remainder of the weekend.

Segment 5: Sports guy Tom Shaer recaps college football results and reports (among many other things) that the White Sox have re-signed Ozzie Guillen

Segment 6: Includes video of a chopper depositing a giant peacock decoration on the top of the NBC Tower and a closing shot of the Channel 5 news weekend staff. (The gentleman on the right holding the cake is cameraman Paul Nagaro; his wife, producer Anna Vasser, is seated next to him).
