Ann Margaret sings!

"Heat Wave" in 1959

Curator's note: The clip below features an 18-year-old Ann Margaret singing "Heat Wave", one of the highlights of New Trier High School's student-produced variety show called "Lagniappe". Rich Samuels takes full blame for the orchestration (in part, an effort to evoke the style of Billy May), though he points out that few high school students (in 1959 or today) have a 24-piece orchestra at their disposal for youthful musical experiments. This recording survives in the form of a cut on a 12" vinyl pressing that featured numbers from the show. Students recorded it. Columbia Records Special Products mastered and pressed it. Bob Moreen conducts the pit orchestra.

Below: the first page of the 1959 Rich Samuels orchestration for the version of "Heatwave" you hear above. Much of this arrangement turned out to be unplayable. Many bars were scrapped. (Thanks to Bob Moreen for preserving this artifact).
